About Our Elementary Schools' Community Partnerships
Elementary students at Matunuck, Peace Dale, Wakefield, and West Kingston explored the world outside their doors—without leaving their seats. Every Monday afternoon, community leaders visited S. Kingstown’s school auditoriums to share what they do and why it matters—and how children can help.
Students focused on place in the fall—the heritage, history, and natural resources of Narragansett Bay. In the winter, they considered the basic needs and diversity of people. And in the spring, they delved into their environment—natural processes, and local flora and fauna.
A broad range of non-profit organizations and agencies volunteered to participate in this creative and cost-effective enrichment program. Presentations engaged the 1,350 students—“buddied up” across 1st –5th grades—through technological media, displays of artifacts and live specimens, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
Framed within a local context, the project linked curriculum with exposure to the real world while promoting sustainable behavior and stewardship, and deepening environmental literacy. Increased knowledge of, sensitivity to and comfort with diversity in the world was intended to further students’ understanding of their total environment — and contribute to their success in school and in life.
